Lokesh Nandan Meher, Saugata Mallick, Manish Kumar Godara

Motivation:
Increasing studies are indicating that social networking is having a positive impact by social connectedness and wellbeing on youth. However negatives are also evident, with cyber-crimes which has become privacy threat to many people. Although social networking has many good sides, including building new contacts or reconnecting with old ones, this has brought some psychological as well as behavioral changes among the youth.

Introduction:
Introduction of social online networking sites has facilitated communication. These are web-sites where users can create a profile and connect that profile to others to form an explicit personal network. Chatting is the one of the most popular activities on the internet nowadays. Through social networking, people can use networks of online friends and group memberships to keep in touch with current friends, reconnect with old friends or create real life friendships through similar interests or groups. Besides establishing important social relationships, social networking members can share their interests with other likeminded members by joining groups and forums. Teenagers and young adults are the most fanatic users of these sites.  When using these sites such as Twitter, Facebook or MySpace, there are both positive and negative effects on the youth.
Impact:

Positive Impact: It is inevitable to ignore the fact that nowadays social network plays an essential role in teenagers’ lives. Most youths are spending at least an hour in these popular social media sites. Generally, 1 out of 7 minutes which are spent online by most of those who can access internet is spent on Facebook. This way social media helps the youth and any other user updated with what is happening around the world, help the teenagers stay connected and interact with each other even if they are many miles apart. This strengthens their relationship even if they finished school and moved to different locations they stay connected and update one another.
In addition, social media sites have provided a platform whereby the youth can create groups and pages based on their common discipline and end up building connections and opportunities for their respective careers by updating various topics to discuss. Youth who have been interviewed they say that social media has become their lifestyle and it makes their lives easier and efficient.

Negative Impact: While on one hand social network sites seems to bring people together and connected on the other hand it creates social isolation in regard to BBC News report. As the youth tend to spend many hours on these sites, they rarely have face-to-face interaction. According various studies, scientists’ evaluation determined that social isolation can lead to a host of emotional, psychological, physical and mental problems which include anxiety, depression and somatic complaints among many others.
Other negative effects of social networking various people suggested included encouraging poor spelling and grammar, exposing underage to online predators, allowing spread of misinformation that is perceived as fact, decreasing productivity as those who are supposed to be working spend time in the sites to chat, provide a perfect platform for cyber bullying and providing details that increase risks of identity theft.

Discussions
Results are taken from 65 respondents. From Fig. 2, we see that 88% of respondents spend their significant time with their classmates/friends. About 32% people spend more than 5 hours a day in social networks (Fig. 1), around 29% chosen between 3-5 hours. It is a total of 51%. Now, if we look at the lifestyle of youths, an average youth gets leisure time around 4-5 hours a day. The significant time spent on SNS (Social Networking Sites) stands around 3-5 hrs for 51% of the respondents, this infers that they like to spent most of their leisure time on SNS. 68% voted positive for missing  out something if they do not participate in SNS. 32% of respondents feel that among their contacts on their profiles, they can borrow a movie or ask for a bike ride to home to only 25-50% of their contacts, which is significantly less.  34% uses SNS just to keep in touch with friends, and 13% just use it for general chatting. Fig. 7 shows that 62% of friends of opposite gender are more in Social networking than in Real Life, as reported by the respondents.

Conclusion
The primary objective of the project undertaken has been to shed light on the evolution of the dominance of social networking sites, their psychological effects among the Internet users and its eventual outcome in the social behavior patterns of youth.

Psychology of Gender Identity and Roles

Team members : Manasa Veena, Priya Apte, Preeti Singh and Anamika Sinha

In earlier days, men hunted and fought in war, while women raised kids and cooked. With improvements in civilization, the status of men and women has gradually changed as per their social identity and roles. The magnitude of this change has been drastic in last few decades with more number of women started to work and holding high positions. A comprehensive analysis of psychological change of opinion in society would help us understand the change in gender roles.

In a land where 80% of its population considered killing widows as a compulsory and sacred act and another 15% demanded women to wear Burka, gender equality is something which was unthinkable. Thanks to western influence, after 67 years of independence, women make certain contribution outside their house. In past few decades, quantitative variables like Female Literacy rates and Gender ratio have showed a healthy trend, but several qualitative aspects are not considered by us. By understanding the perception on Gender Identity and Roles, would throw some light on that.

An Online questionnaire was floated to over hundreds of respondents from different background to get their opinion and perception on Gender Identity and Roles. Few set of situations were given for which respondents were asked to give their personal opinion and their opinion on what society would think. This would give insights on the Roles of Women in society. To understand the gender identity, respondents were asked for their reactions on various situations.
Few Clusters/groups were formed based on respondents Gender, education and if their mother/sister is working. Perception on Gender Identity and Roles are studied for different groups separately to identify if there are any similarities. Then the overall perceptions of different groups are compared to check the effect of socio-political factors.

Results:
·         Responses among different groups are very much similar, which means the factors like Gender, Education Level and having a close women relative working, play a significant role in influencing ones perception on Gender Roles and Identity
·         Among groups, there is a significant difference in Gender Roles, but the gender identity has not shown significant change.
·         Respondents with women relatives working have provided more evolved opinion

The above results indicate the perception on gender status is from socio-political factors affecting the person. This means a persons social environment would decide his opinion on Gender Status.
While having different opinion on womens role in society, the identity of women has not changed where women are expected to conform to certain type of behavior. This indicates the society is ready to accept womens new roles like getting educated or going to job, while theyre still constrained with several norms which theyre expected to follow.
Being an issue which is deeply imbibed in our mind, a mere push via education or other programmes might not be that effective to change the perception. It would require society to see/experience the change to make even small alterations in their perception. A holistic way to address the issue

The quantitative developments in various gender related aspects is required to be complemented with qualitative improvements in womens social positions. This requires women to be free of several political constraints which would improve their social identity and in turn provides a holistic Gender Equality.

Answering a sensitive issue, many respondents might take safe and diplomatic stand, which might not give true response. The study does not have responses from rural people and different Socio-Economic Class, which would have given new perspectives.

OLD AGE HOMES

A debate is going on, are old age homes a necessity? There are two groups, one for and another against. It seems to be a necessary evil. Many elderly people are left to fend for themselves, and having some help with all chores seems to be ideal.
Many elderly people are left to manage on their own. Or the children bring them to old age homes and leave them there, promising to come for them later. They know it is not true, so also the elders. Once in an old age home, there is no leaving.
There are expensive old age homes, they are well managed and the people living there will experience a star hotel ambience. There will be doctors on call, entertainment, and well laid out areas for exercise and walks. Children can visit and I think the elderly too can leave for home stay once in a while. No matter how well appointed or maintained the old age home is, it cannot be like home. And the people staying there will have a feeling of abandonment.
Some children justify that they have no choice. Their life is in some other country. Their parents do not adjust to alien culture and do not wish to leave the shores of their homeland. They cannot be left to fend for themselves, why should they work when everything can be provided for them?  There is a grain of truth in this, but still the elders feel lonely and yearn for their children’s company.
The old age homes that run on donations are not so well maintained. The organizations running them are doing their best. But it is sometimes pathetic to see the people there. They are wizened people, who shuffle around doing as much of their personal chores as possible.
Those elderly who are abused by children, may feel the old age home is heaven. But later they feel they wish to go back home. Because no place can beat a home, however painful it is. A home means family, and family means belonging. Those who do not have any family, for them old age homes can be a blessing. But those who have family, for them being sent to old age home is like condemning them to death. The life goes out of their eyes. They know they are no longer wanted, their use is over. And this pain hastens their end.
There are day care centers for the elderly. A place where they come and spend the time with their peers and return home in the evening. This is looked forward to by many. It is a chance for them to meet people and share their experiences. Since they get to go home in the night, these centers do not threaten them.
Do you think old age homes are necessary? Are such homes a sign of changing society’s values?  Are the old no longer necessary in the society of youth?  Are they a hindrance and they can be tolerated from a distance only? Is our society becoming so self-centered?
We have noticed that the first generation and the third generation do not have trouble between them. In fact there is good bonding between these generations. The problem seems to be between the first and second generation.
An elderly gentleman was heard lamenting, that he and his wife had a son and a daughter. But when they were married, they became the property of their respective spouses. They no longer belonged to the parents who gave birth to them. How this man must have suffered.
We feel if we cannot care for our aged parents, then we do not deserve to call ourselves human beings. If we cannot respect and love them when they are old and wrinkled, how can we claim to have a heart?  When they are old, the aged can be a handful. But abandoning them to someone else to care for, is the height of callousness. Can we be ever forgiven for such behavior?
Our old have to be revered and cared for. They are the reason we are here, they are responsible for us, and now that they are old and infirm, they are our responsibility. Roles get switched, they need us now, later we will need our children. Life is a circle, many seem to forget that. Or they are in denial.
